With Karen Tam
Ever wondered how to get amazing colours from nature? How flowers and leaves can be used to colour our world even more? Are you interested in dyeing your own fabrics in an interesting and sustainable way?
This intimate workshop will focus on dye methods with a low environmental impact. Learn how to look for and identify potential sources of colour, use foraged or bought botanicals, kitchen waste, and often overlooked pantry staples items. We will also identify areas for further fun and exploration.
We will extract colour together from ingredients like avocados, onion skins, turmeric, eucalyptus, flowers and foliage, to dye various fabric samples, learn some basic shibori dyeing, and also how to steam flowers and leaves to make a bundle dye print. You can choose to dye your new silk scarf (28 x 160cm) in either the dye vats we make, or make a beautiful flower bundle print.
Each participant will take home:-
- their newly dyed fabric samples (perfect to turn into a creative project such as patchwork and applique)
- their dyed silk scarf (shibori dyed in natural dye or flower steamed)
- notes covering fabric preparation, dye preparation techniques and procedure, recommended dyestuffs, expected outcomes and care instructions for their dyed items
- recommended further reading and resource list
In this small-sized class, you will get tips and tricks in achieving good dyeing results along the way. You finish with a collection of naturally dyed samples for patchwork, craft or reference, and can enjoying wear your own unique scarf or make it as a gift. Extra scarves will be available for purchase on the day if you would like to dye more than one. Most of all, you will go home with confidence and an appetite to explore natural colour in a sustainable and fun way.
