With Karen Tam
Ever wondered how to get beautiful colours from nature? Are you interested in whetting your creative appetite in a new and sustainable way?
This introductory workshop will focus on natural dye methods with low environmental impacts. Learn how to look for potential sources of colour, use foraged botanicals, kitchen waste, and often overlooked pantry items. We will also identify areas for further exploration and generate thought provoking discussions on the current use of natural dyes and future trends.
We will extract colour together from ingredients like avocados, onion skins, turmeric, eucalyptus, flowers and foliage, to dye various fabric samples, dye a silk scarf using basic shibori methods, and you will see a demonstration of bundle dyeing using flowers, leaves and steam.
Each participant will take home:-
- their newly dyed fabric samples (perfect to turn into a creative project such as patchwork and applique), and a silk shibori patterned scarf
- notes covering fabric preparation (mordanting choices), dye preparation techniques, recommended dyestuffs, expected outcomes and care instructions for their dyed items
- recommended further reading and resource list
You will also get tips and tricks in achieving good dyeing results along the way. And go home with confidence and an appetite to explore natural colour in a sustainable and fun way.
Please note – the natural indigo process is not included in this workshop as that involves an entire separate process, however Karen brings her knowledge and experience of this working with natural indigo pigment and shares tips of what she has learnt along the way.
